FRI 8/31 | 9:00 PM EDT | STANFORD STADIUM
SAN DIEGO ST:
Donnel Pumphrey, Rashaad Penny and Juwan Washington. Get Familiar with the third running back, as he looks primed to join the first two as SDSU RBs who ran over, around and through Mountain West defenses. Washington rush for 759 yards as the backup to Penny (2,248) last season; unneeded to say, there are lots of rushing yards to be had in this offense. On defense, most of the contributors are back from a strong unit that should be even better this season.
- Aztecs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Friday games.
- Under is 5-1 in Aztecs last 6 games in August.
- Aztecs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games.
As David Shaw has set a consistent of excellent defenses at Stanford, last year’s group performed beneath the program’s usual standards. Things ended on a low note, too, as the Cardinal surrendered 35.0 PPG in two losses to end the year. And with S Justin Reid and DT Harrison Phillips gone, each a third-round NFL draft pick, improvement won’t magically happen. The good news is this: Bryce Love is back. Love was excited last season 2,100 yards on the ground, and holds the number one spot in the Heisman race as the season kicks off. Stanford returns an veteran QB, as well, in K.J. Costello.
- Cardinal are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on grass.
- Under is 4-1 in Cardinal last 5 home games.
- Cardinal are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
This pick is assuming both running backs don’t have good games Friday. A lot will depend on Stanford’s new and unproven linebackers. If they can contain Washington and San Diego St.’s defense plays how we know they can, the scoring should be low.
Prediction: Under 51.5
