SYRACUSE @ PITTSBURGH | 10/06 | 12:20 PM EDT
The emphasize of the 2017 season for Syracuse was a spectacular home upset over Clemson, a game the Orange entered as 23-point underdogs. The lowlight was, well, each and every single game after that: ‘Cuse lost all five of them, and each of the last three by at least three goals. Eric Dungey is still around as beginning quarterback, but his toughness concerns have added to late-season collapses like in 2015’s. This defense tends to resist the pass, and an inexperienced secondary this year doesn’t use much pledge for correcting that concern.
A brutal out-of-conference slate (Penn State, at UCF, at Notre Dame) would appear to put a low ceiling on Pittsburgh’s win overall this season. That said, fans of the Panthers will have an interesting team to watch. Now-sophomore Kenny Pickett took control of the reigns at quarterback late last season, and he helped propel his group to an upset over unbeaten Miami with two rushing goals in Pitt’s season ending. The defense returns nearly everyone, which need to offer Pickett some decent margin for mistake as he continues to turn into his function as a starter.
Syracuse pounded Florida State and UConn, but I became a believe after last week, when it should have won at Clemson before the Tigers pulled it out 27-23. The Orange average more than 230 yards rushing and passing, and have faced stiffer defenses than Pittsburgh’s, which has been torched for 35 and 38 points the last two weeks, and didn’t handle a QB with running abilities last week when UCF’s McKenzie Milton totaled 379 yards and six TDs. Orange QB Eric Dungey should have a big day.
